About ecomtoolshed

ecomtoolshed is an independent publication about the software that runs online stores. We publish research, pricing breakdowns, alternatives comparisons, and migration guidance for sellers who need to choose tools without wasting a quarter on the wrong one.

Why this site exists

Most software reviews tell you a tool is “powerful” and “intuitive”. That tells you nothing about whether it will cost you $79 or $1,400 a month at the volume you actually do, whether the free tier still does the one thing you need it for, whether your data comes back out if you leave, or what breaks when you switch.

Those are the questions we answer. A table that turns three pricing pages into one realistic monthly cost for a small store is worth more than another thousand words of impressions.

What we cover

Area What we compare
Storefront and checkout Transaction fees, plan tiers, payment processing, product limits, tax handling
Email marketing List-size pricing, deliverability features, automation limits, what the free tier really allows
Funnels and page builders Plan gating, template limits, checkout integration, page-speed trade-offs
Operations stack Helpdesk, forms, scheduling, and the glue tools small teams actually use
Pricing economics Real monthly cost at stated volumes, overage behaviour, annual-vs-monthly difference, cost of the tier you actually need
Migration Export formats, what transfers, what must be rebuilt by hand, and what breaks

We weight the content toward the questions that decide a purchase: what does this cost at my volume, can I get my data out, and what breaks when I switch.

Our editorial standard

We do not hold accounts with, or personally operate, every product we write about, and we never claim that we do.

That sentence is on the site deliberately. Most review sites imply far more hands-on use than they have. We took the opposite route: describe the method precisely, label anything we could not verify, and let you decide how much weight to place on it.

What we actually do:

  1. Work from the vendor’s own documentation. Pricing pages, plan comparison tables, help-centre articles, changelogs, and status pages are the primary sources. When a limit is not published, we say so instead of estimating.
  2. Aggregate user reporting. We read reviews and community threads across review platforms, forums, and vendor communities, then look for patterns. One angry review is noise; the same billing complaint described by dozens of users is a signal.
  3. Model the bill. We take the published price at a stated volume and show the arithmetic, including overage charges and the plan you would actually need.
  4. Cross-check claims against each other. When a marketing page and a help-centre article disagree, we report the conflict rather than picking the flattering number.

The full method, including its limits, is on the How We Research page. Our sourcing, correction, and independence rules are on the Editorial Policy page.

Who writes this

ecomtoolshed is run by a small independent editorial operation. Content is researched and written by the site operator with the assistance of research tooling for gathering and organising published sources; every published claim is checked against the sources listed at the bottom of the article.

We do not use AI to fabricate experience. We do not generate invented test results, invented user quotes, or invented prices. Where automation helps, it is in collecting public information and comparing it — not in making things up.

How we make money

ecomtoolshed is funded by affiliate commissions. If you sign up for a tool through a link on this site, the vendor may pay us a commission. You pay the same price either way. Commissions do not determine our rankings, our scores, or our conclusions, and we have recommended tools that pay us nothing.

We do not accept payment for positive coverage and we do not accept free accounts in exchange for reviews. No vendor sees an editorial article before you do. Where we publish sponsored content, it is labelled as sponsored and kept out of our rankings — the Editorial Policy explains the separation in full. The specifics of our funding, including every affiliate program we participate in, are on the Affiliate Disclosure page.

What we are not

  • We are not a software vendor, and we do not sell or support any tool.
  • We are not a systems integrator or migration service. We do not perform migrations.
  • We are not lawyers, accountants, or compliance auditors. Nothing here is legal, tax, or security advice — see our Disclaimer.
  • We are not affiliated with any vendor named on this site, beyond a disclosed affiliate relationship.

Corrections

If we got something wrong, we want to know and we will fix it. Email editor@ecomtoolshed.com with the article and the source you are relying on. Our Editorial Policy explains how corrections are recorded.
